Book review: It only happens in the movies by Holly Bourne
This page contains spoilers, bad language and sexual references throughout. If you are under 16 please do not read!
Published in October 2017 it wasn’t until earlier this year that I purchased this book and it sat on my shelf through the inevitable ‘I don’t have anything to read’ phase. At first glance it was teen romance with sass and sarcasm a plenty, but as I read further I started to truly understand the depth that Holly has managed to achieve with her main character Audrey. Any teen struggling to balance all of life’s puzzle pieces should without a doubt pick up a copy!
It begins with Audrey starting her new job in her local cinema, meeting Harry and learning all about his ‘fuck-boy’ ways. This doesn’t stop her falling head over heels in love with him though and we follow along from there navigating family drama, sex conundrums and friend fuck-ups. We grow with Audrey and seeing her grow enough to walk away not only breaks my heart but puts it back together again.
‘We have so many scenes left. Just not with each other’
That broke me.
And my shelf.
It only happens in the movies is a book that was so frustratingly good that i ordered two more books by Holly Bourne the same day. So well written that I was lost in a world of awkward kisses, stale popcorn and sticky fake blood. It not only captivated me but I was so emotionally invested in Audrey and Harry’s relationship that I read this in one sitting.
